This Women’s Month, six female farmers from North West and Gauteng delivered their first harvest of small white beans to Tiger Brands—beans that are essential for producing one of South Africa’s favourite staples: KOO Baked Beans. Through her company SE Holdings, Mpumi Maesela is building enterprises that uplift communities, especially women historically excluded from commercial agriculture.
Tiger Brands responded to local crop failures in 2024 by partnering with SE Holdings to launch a comprehensive support programme, including agronomic training, soil health management, business mentoring, and R6 million in tools like harvesters and drones. This has enabled farmers to meet quality standards and build resilience against future shocks.
Farmers Marienkie Ntuli and Nolufefe “Fefe” Maqubela now cultivate over 230 hectares combined and employ more than 100 people. They describe how access to machinery and stable markets has allowed them to grow confidently, cutting fertiliser costs, improving yields, and investing back into their communities.
