Sleep Group celebrates heritage and growth

Sleep Group, southern Africa’s largest integrated bedding manufacturer, is celebrating Heritage Month by reflecting on its journey from humble family origins to a corporate leader in the sector. Founded in 1939 as Metz Furniture, the company began with horse-and-cart deliveries before rebranding as Metz Bedding in 1981. Entrepreneurial drive and a commitment to quality enabled steady growth, leading to the introduction of the Restonic brand to South Africa in the 1990s.

In 2015, the family business became part of JSE-listed KAP Limited, bringing new resources and the creation of a fully integrated bedding business. Today, Sleep Group’s portfolio includes Restonic South Africa, Genessi, Vitafoam, VitaTex, DesleeMattex and Restonic Namibia, supported by one of Africa’s largest bedding factories.

Employing nearly 2,000 people, the group invests heavily in training, with more than 80% of recent promotions awarded to staff it has upskilled. Its strategy also includes investment in recycling, energy efficiency, community initiatives and sleep research.

Looking ahead, Sleep Group aims to double its size within five years, combining growth with sustainability and continuing to build on its heritage of passion, innovation and people-centred values.
