Totalsports continues to support local initiatives that look to improve the lives and health of those living in disadvantaged areas corresponding to their vision that sports is inclusive and should be accessible to everyone. As a leading partner in the Alexandra Safe-Hub for Youth and Community Development, Totalsports is set to help implement one of the largest and most impactful development projects in South Africa.

“Safe-Hub is an initiative that we are very excited about and being a part of this inspiring operation has given us the opportunity to show our commitment to this community,” explains Darren Sobotker, Totalsports brand manager. “Totalsports is seen as not only a sports brand, but through our actions and the projects that we support, as a sports brand that cares about the community and how they excel.”

Together with major players in both public and private sectors such as National Government and the Development Bank of Southern Africa, the end goal is to roll out 100 Safe-Hubs across the country, starting with Alexandra. This campaign is set to engage 1 million young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, creating 150 000 work and training opportunities and 200 000 permanent jobs.

“Totalsports fully supports and aligns itself with Safe-Hub’s vision to have a world where young people have access to equal opportunities and strive to realise their full potential and dare to dream. We are invested in working with Safe-Hub in providing for those within the area the opportunity to access a safe place where they can take part in activities and build their futures,” comments Sobotker.

Alexandra Safe-Hub recently held their opening ceremony together with late Johannesburg mayor Jolidee Matongo, key partners and members of the community. The Safe-Hub facility is designed as a youth development ecosystem that serves as the anchor within the area and will host the following activities:

  • Afterschool and work recreation programmes
  • Business development services and training
  • Skills development, employment and entrepreneurship services and training including accredited learnerships
  • Shared office space and start-up school
  • Health and wellness support services; digital and future skills programmes
  • Early childhood development services, and
  • Green economy services and training, including urban farming and waste management solutions.

Through this development, a place where people of the community can feel safe while exploring, learning and achieving has been created. This vision has become a reality through the partnership of different players, Safe-Hub and Totalsports.
