While Easter is often synonymous with family gatherings and chocolate treats, for many children in under-resourced communities, these traditions remain out of reach. Local organisation Bana Ba Kgotso is working to bridge this gap, completing its latest campaign to ensure the children of Tembisa experience the festive spirit through a unique community-driven model.
Since its inception during the 2020 lockdown, Bana Ba Kgotso has transformed the holiday period into a time of collective action. The organisation’s approach is distinct: members canvas the community offering services such as car washing, house cleaning, and general labour. Instead of cash, they request payment in the form of boxes of Easter eggs.
The initiative has seen significant growth over the years. Following a highly successful previous campaign where 7,000 Easter eggs were distributed, the organisation once again mobilised to collect treats, clothing, and essential supplies.
“We always try to bring the tradition of Easter eggs to children in our community so that they can feel valued and joyful during this holiday,” said Dennis Rasekgela, a representative of Bana Ba Kgotso. “Many children in Thembisa do not have the opportunity to celebrate Easter due to various circumstances.”
The Easter weekend activities extended beyond the distribution of sweets. The organisation curated a festive environment featuring:
- Interactive Games: Traditional activities like “Find My Egg” to encourage play and community bonding.
- Nutritional Support: Hot meals prepared for both children and adults.
- Essential Donations: The distribution of blankets and clothing collected since January to assist households in need.
Rasekgela emphasised that the mission is about more than just food parcels; it is about fostering a sense of belonging. “For us, Easter is about spending time with those who support and rely on us daily,” he added.
The success of the Easter drive relies heavily on the generosity of local businesses and residents who responded to the call for donations. However, the organisation’s work does not end with the holiday.
Bana Ba Kgotso has already begun pivoting its efforts towards Youth Day in June. The upcoming phase of their outreach will focus on supporting unemployed youth and families facing severe financial hardship, continuing their cycle of community-led social support.
