For over a decade, Mandela Day has mobilised individuals, civil society and corporate entities to make the world a better place for all. In the lead-up to Mandela Day, CSI Agency, MAMAS Alliance, urges corporates to take action to inspire change.

With a network of 2 200 Mamas across 37 independent autonomous NGOs operating from 75 predominantly rural sites, MAMAS Alliance prioritises the empowerment and upliftment of vulnerable youth and children across South Africa, every day.

MAMAS Alliance’s year-round goals are aligned to many of the objectives of Mandela Day, particularly where children are concerned. This includes reducing hunger and malnutrition, increasing access to education and ECD centres, and the provision of shelter and nurturing environments. With their network of NGOs taking care of the needs of more than 60 000 children daily, MAMAS Alliance urges corporates to take action to inspire change, and to take this action every day.

For over a decade, Mandela Day has mobilised individuals, civil society and corporate entities to make the world a better place for all. The MAMAS Alliance CSI Agency aims to simplify CSI by facilitating and supporting the partnership between funder and NGO. The Agency works at no cost. All funds flow directly from the CSI-funder to the benefitting NGO. MAMAS identifies effective, reputable, well-run NGOs within their network to fulfil corporate CSI strategies.

By monitoring investments, providing regular reporting and facilitating site visits where desired MAMAS makes CSI easier for both companies and NGOs. Companies who collaborate with MAMAS Alliance throughout the year can benefit from having the necessary logistics and admin taken care of, at no cost, with 100% of their CSI funds going directly to those in need, to better the lives of our children and youth.

“Making every day a Mandela Day has never been more vital and no matter how large or small the action might seem, it all contributes towards helping our most vulnerable, whether it is providing food, clothing or stationery hampers, or supporting ECD centres,” says MAMAS.

MAMAS Mandela Day focus – every day

  • MAMAS is concentrating efforts on KZN-affected beneficiaries – to keep sourcing donations for them because rebuilding and bouncing back is not an overnight occurrence, it is a process.
  • The post-Covid era cannot really be considered ‘post’ at all. There are many casualties in the wake of the pandemic and its economic impact, resulting in exacerbated food insecurity – MAMAS focus is to create more awareness around this and to champion corporate involvement.

Ways corporates can create impact:

  • Mentor a leader of an NGO
  • Provide food parcels
  • Provide school uniforms and blankets
  • Provide stationery packs – pencil bag, pencils, pens, eraser, ruler, sharpener
  • Spend the day at an NGO of your choice interacting with the children
  • Spend the day at an NGO and offer basic ‘handyman’ maintenance services and supply of equipment for painting, basic repair, supply of energy-saving lightbulbs etc.
  • Provide seeds and tools for home gardens to enable and encourage food sustainability
