Scheduled Maintenance Phases Deliver Lasting Social Benefits in KwaZulu-Natal

At Sappi’s Tugela and Stanger mills, routine maintenance shutdowns are more than technical pauses—they are deliberate opportunities to generate meaningful local impact. These planned shutdowns create jobs, drive SME growth, and reinforce Sappi’s commitment to community development.

As part of their Enterprise and Supplier Development programme, the company invested over R4.2 million in local small businesses. Notable beneficiaries include:

  • Bonito Cleaning, a woman-owned firm in Mandeni, which scaled from a small business into a team of 44 permanent staff and hired 110 jobseekers during the shutdown—45% of whom were women.
  • Isizwe Samalanga, employing 50 people in KwaDukuza, with 10 female workers supported.

Sappi also sources nearly 370 general and semi-skilled workers through Integrated Community Forums, reinforcing inclusivity and local employment. Stanger Mill General Manager Philani Gumede captures the ethos: “Shutdowns are about more than machinery—they’re about enabling progress for people and communities.”

Through this approach, Sappi transforms what could be downtime into a strategic catalyst for economic upliftment, supplier development, and gender-inclusive opportunity. Their model exemplifies how industrial operations can align intentional corporate shutdowns with genuine social value.
