As one of the fastest developing sectors in the country, the growth of security industry reflects the important position it occupies in business, government and the community. Accounting for more than 500,000 active members, the security industry is one of the largest entry level employers in the country, providing a stable source of income for many households.

As a means to help address unemployment within its host communities, Kumba Iron Ore has provided security training for 100 unemployed local youth. Partnering with local SME – Microchip Security to facilitate the initiative, the PSIRA accredited training over a period of three months equipped the participants with Grade EDC training which covers topics such as risk identification, patrol procedures and access control.

Celebrating the completion of the security training program, Northern Cape Hub Corporate Affairs Manager – Adriaana Slambert during a certificate handover ceremony, encouraged the participants to seize this opportunity to change their lives.

“The continuous growth of Private Security Industry in the country demonstrates that there’s a need in the for this type of work in the job market. Through this initiative, we’ve equipped you with the necessary skill and knowledge to tap into this sector.

This training program demonstrates our approach to livelihoods which seeks to ensure that residents in our host communities have access to employment opportunities that will allow them to improve their standard of living.

I hope the training you received over the past 3 months will be put to good use and empower you to provide for yourselves and your families”.

As part of the initiative, Microchip Security will employ some of the trained participants and whilst the rest are registered on the Passport 360 recruitment platform that Kumba Iron Ore and its partners use, to match candidates with potential employment opportunities.
