The Vaal University of Technology (VUT), through the Department of Community Engagement collaborated with the Gauteng Department of Social Development for this year’s Nelson Mandela International Day.
The two spent the day at the Kitso Information Development Centre in Boitshepiville, Sharpeville. Primarily, the visit was aimed at supporting the Centre to re-establish its communal food garden. In addition, more than two hundred (200) community members were fed for the day, while the elderly citizens, orphaned, homeless and those from child headed families received grocery hampers and warm blankets.
Mr Joseph Norman Radebe, the acting Director Community Engagement at VUT outlined the purpose of the event and re-emphasised the institution’s commitment in assisting local communities. He further indicated that VUT has a strategic mandate of improving the material conditions of communities through its third pillar of community engagement, alongside teaching and learning.
The event was graced by the Gauteng MEC for Social Development, Ms Faith Mazibuko who also delivered a keynote address. Also, among those in attendance to support the event were more than fifty (50) VUT staff and students.
