Africa’s youngest climate change activist and Kenya’s youngest Mashujaa (national hero) is changing the world of environmental awareness and sustainability, one tree at a time.

Ellyanne Chlystun-Githae Wanjiku is 12 years old and loves riding her bicycle around Hillview Estate in Nairobi, just as any young person in grade seven loves to do when they’re not at their desks studying or involved in an extra-curricula activity.

What Ellyanne has managed to do, over and above excel in her school work, is plant over 1.3 million trees and come face-to-face with world leaders, including Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, to send a profound message that our planet Earth is in grave peril.

ImpactSA, together with Columba Leadership and Afrika Tikkun Services, have curated a series of conversations with African youth leaders and mentors, all of whom celebrate and inspire passion for the future of our continent – our youth.

We spoke to Ellyanne about her journey.
